Mouse Basics

This guide is designed to help gamers understand what to look for in a gaming mouse. By exploring key features and technologies, we’ll cover the key aspects to consider when choosing the right mouse to enhance your gaming performance and comfort.

The Three C's

Unlike standard mice, gaming mice are uniquely designed to enable gamers to play at their best, prioritizing the three C’s: comfort, control, and customizability.

Comfort

A wide range of shape and size options let gamers pick a mouse that lets them play in maximum comfort without encountering strain or fatigue.

Control

Lighter weights and high-performance tracking make gameplay feel more intuitive to control for gamers, improving their reaction speed and accuracy.

Customizability

Remappable buttons, adjustable performance, and customizable lighting let gamers fine-tune their mouse experience to their exact preference.

Is there a "best" gaming mouse?

Short answer? No.

The concept of a "best gaming mouse" is subjective and varies based on the gamer’s individual preferences and needs. However, using our three C’s framework will help you identify and prioritize mouse attributes that matter to your unique playstyle, resulting in a more informed buying decision.

THE THREE C'S

Comfort

Finding a gaming mouse can be likened to buying a pair of running shoes. While all the flashy high-performance tech can be exciting, it’s important to make sure it’s comfortable to use over extended use – The last thing you want to experience while gaming is fatigue or discomfort.

Mouse Shape

Mice come in two major shape types: symmetrical and ergonomic. Symmetrical mice, like our Model O 2, are versatile for all grip styles thanks to its neutral design. Ergonomic mice, like our Model D 2, favor more robust hand support thanks to their asymmetrical, contoured designs. Some ergonomic mice, like our Model I 2, even feature a molded thumb rest for even more hand support.

Mouse Size

Finding a mouse size that matches your hand is essential to ensure confident control and avoid fatigue during gameplay. For gamers with small to medium hands, it's recommend to opt for a smaller mouse.

By measuring from the wrist crease to the tip of the middle finger, hand sizes can be grouped by the following:

  • Small = 6.9in (17.5cm) or less
  • Medium = 6.9 - 7.9in (17.5-20cm)
  • Large = 7.9in (20cm) or more

Grip Style

Grip style refers to how gamers prefer to hold their mouse. Three common styles are:

  • Palm: Palm and fingers make substantial contact with the mouse.
  • Claw: Minor contact with curved fingertips and partial palm.
  • Fingertip: Minor contact with curved fingertips, no palm contact.

THE THREE C'S

Control

Once you’ve found the right shape and size, here are some features and technologies that every worthwhile gaming mouse should include.

Optical Sensor

High-performance gaming mice use advanced optical sensors for accurate tracking and faster response times. This is crucial for fast-paced games where precision matters. A powerful sensor allows you to fine-tune your mouse settings like sensitivity (known as DPI) or tracking speed (IPS) for optimal control of your movements.

All Glorious mice are geared with our proprietary optical sensor, which seamlessly tracks high-speed mouse glides. Glorious mice are also equipped with Motion Sync technology, which ensures aiming feels smooth and precise without jittering or skipping.

Polling Rate

Another tech spec to take into consideration is polling rate, which refers to how often the mouse tells the computer where it is and what it’s doing.

Most gaming mice poll at 1,000Hz, which communicates movements and clicks to the PC up to 1,000 times per second, or every 1 millisecond.

Competitive gaming mice, like Model O 2 PRO and Model D 2 PRO 4K/8KHz Editions, raise the bar with their ability to poll wirelessly at 2,000Hz and 4,000Hz, while also offering a staggering 8,000Hz in wired mode for turbocharged precision.

Connectivity: Wired, 2.4GHz Wireless, and Bluetooth

Wireless mice offer an unmatched degree of movement and versatility, but are sometimes dispelled because of “potential lagging.” However, high-performance gaming mice with 2.4 GHz wireless pairing boast fast and lag-free connectivity.

Gaming mice that also feature Bluetooth connectivity are capable of pairing with other devices such as tablets, and allow you to maximize your battery life.

On the other hand, wired gaming mice are a great option in terms of reliability and price considerations.

Switches and their Durability

When it comes to mouse buttons, mechanical switches have traditionally been the go-to. However, gaming mice with optical switches use infrared light to register an input, requiring no physical contact within the switch. This makes them up to 80% faster than mechanical and results in much more durability.

It’s important to take into consideration the click life-cycle when making your decision. For example, the Glorious V2 mice lineup utilize optical switches are are rated for an 80 million click lifespan. That’s a 300% increase from the first generation, which was rated at 20 million clicks with mechanical switches.

THE THREE C'S

Customizability

The customization of a gaming mouse unlocks a world of personalized performance and aesthetics, enhancing the interaction between gamer and game.

Sensitivity (DPI)

DPI (Dots Per Inch) or CPI (Counts Per Inch) determines a mouse's sensitivity, with higher DPI settings enabling significant cursor movement for minimal physical effort, perfect for precise control or quick navigation.

Customizing DPI allows users to tailor sensitivity to their liking, ensuring a seamless blend of accuracy and speed.

RGB Lighting

RGB lighting on gaming mice elevates the visual flair, allowing players to tailor their gear's aesthetics to align with their setup or mood, enriching the gaming experience with personalized style.

Remapping Buttons

Gaming mice with programmable buttons greatly enhance your in-game performance. When you configure your mouse buttons to store your frequently used actions, you can quickly and conveniently access them while playing your favorite games.

If this is a feature you find beneficial, look for gaming mice with specialized buttons. The Model I 2, for example, has nine programmable buttons, as well as a Layer Shift function, which lets you toggle between two layers of macros per button. This setting can be configured in CORE 2.0.
